Let me start by saying that people have different reasons for choosing Do It Yourself sheds. For some they relish the challenge of getting their teeth into something from the very beginning, and seeing it through to the very end.
Others might be thinking more of finances, and they believe that it is cheaper to build your own shed, than buy one from the shops. Then there are those of us that are just after the convenience that a storage kits offer.
So, the million-dollar question is “What is your own reason for wanting to buy a do it yourself shed”?
The first and most important step for assembling a DIY shed is to plan the work you are going to do. This includes:
- Deciding on the material you are going to use. Do you want to use wood, metal, vinyl or plastic?
- Are you going to design the shed yourself or would you rather get one of the commercially available garden shed designs and save yourself the bother of design
- How big is your shed going to be? Allied to this is the intended purpose of the shed. If you are building a shed to store a large lawn mower then it needs to be larger than one that will be used for just storing the kids’ bikes.
- How much do you want to spend? It is important to be aware that Do It Yourself sheds can range in price from a few hundred dollars to several thousands, so it is important to know up front what your budget is and plan accordingly.
- Choose a location. You will need a flat surface for erecting the shed.
When you have decided on all these issues, it is then time to get down to the real business of buying materials and tools, getting them delivered and so on. In my opinion, you will save yourself a lot of aggravation by getting one of the many storage shed plans or garden shed plans that are available on the Internet.
Download one that suits your purpose, and use it as a general guide for the work ahead.
