Let me start by saying that people have different reasons for choosing Do It Yourself sheds. For some they relish the challenge of getting their teeth into something from the very beginning, and seeing it through to the very end.

Others might be thinking more of finances, and they believe that it is cheaper to build your own shed, than buy one from the shops. Then there are those of us that are just after the convenience that a storage kits offer.

So, the million-dollar question is “What is your own reason for wanting to buy a do it yourself shed”?

The first and most important step for assembling a DIY shed is to plan the work you are going to do. This includes:

Deciding on the material you are going to use. Do you want to use wood, metal, vinyl or plastic?
Are you going to design the shed yourself or would you rather get one of the commercially available garden shed designs and save yourself the bother of design
How big is your shed going to be? Allied to this is the intended purpose of the shed. If you are building a shed to store a large lawn mower then it needs to be larger than one that will be used for just storing the kids’ bikes.
How much do you want to spend? It is important to be aware that Do It Yourself sheds can range in price from a few hundred dollars to several thousands, so it is important to know up front what your budget is and plan accordingly.
Choose a location. You will need a flat surface for erecting the shed.

When you have decided on all these issues, it is then time to get down to the real business of buying materials and tools, getting them delivered and so on. In my opinion, you will save yourself a lot of aggravation by getting one of the many storage shed plans or garden shed plans that are available on the Internet.

Download one that suits your purpose, and use it as a general guide for the work ahead.

Building A Storage Shed Door The Easy Way

So you want to take on the challenging task of building a shed door? I admire your determination, because most people I know would rather get their tooth pulled out than build a shed door themselves.

However, when you consider that a new door from a DIY retailer could cost in excess of $200, suddenly the option of building your own doesn’t seem so bad after all. Some of us don’t have a lot of money to throw around, so anything we can do to save even a few pennies is very useful.

Let’s set about building a shed door in a manner that even a first timer will feel comfortable with.

You will need to determine the measurement of the door opening for the door you want to build. Use a tape to measure the length and width of the opening.
Get a piece of plywood that is longer and wider than the opening you have just measured. For a single door, you will need to cut off a piece that is equal in width and length to the opening.
The next step involves painting the plywood and leaving it to dry for an appropriate amount of time.
About a foot below shoulder height, fit in the doorknob so that it is about 4 inches from the edge of the long side of the plywood.
Screw in one hinge a foot below the top of the door frame, and the other hinge a foot above the bottom of the door frame.
Also drill holes for the hinge a foot below one of the short sides of the plywood, and the other hinge one foot above the other short side.
Proceed to attach the door to the loose ends of the two hinges.

That is about it. You have not only succeeded in building a shed door, you have also fitted it to the shed. It wasn’t that difficult was it? Congratulations for taking the steps to build your own shed door.

It is important to get your measurements right, otherwise you will end up with a door that is either too small for the opening, or one that is over-sized and does not fit into the opening. Just one small mistake can prove to be very expensive, so it is in your interest to be very careful.

Fast forward time by a few centuries, and hooray, we have fairly cheap shed kits that let you build your own shed, even if you don’t know the difference between a carpet and a carpenter.

With a garden shed kit, the wooden shed is pre-fabricated, and all you have to do is put it together, put in a few screws here and there, and behold you have a new shed. Ok… it’s not quite as easy as that, but you get the picture, I hope.

To make things even better, there is such a wide variety of garden shed designs to choose from that you are bound to be spoilt for choice. Let’s put it this way… I wouldn’t want to be in your shoes if you were in the market for a new wooden shed.

But being the kind gentleman that I am, I am going to share three absolutely gorgeous choices with you.

First is the Cabana Cedar Garden Shed which is a delightfully tasteful shed that would satisfy even the most demanding requirements. It measures 9 feet by 6 feet, and is multipurpose in use.

Next we have the Kingston Wood Storage Shed by handy Home Products. It’s not very big in size, but the simplicity of its design is just ingenuous. It measures only 8 feet by 8 feet, and is ideal for storing garden tools.

I have chosen the Somerset Wood Storage Shed as the last choice. They call it a shed, but it looks more like a cabin to me. It measures 10 X 12, but presents an imposing façade.

Metal Storage Sheds Make Perfect Sense

For some reason, metal storage sheds are not very popular. When I consider the benefits offered by metal sheds, their lack of popularity never ceases to amaze me. Let’s look at some reasons why I think metal storage sheds make a lot of sense.

Contrary to popular opinion, metal sheds are not difficult to assemble. Many of them are made from aluminum, which means that they are not only strong, but very light as well. You can actually erect metal sheds without a foundation, and this is a huge saving in both time and cost. Erecting an aluminum shed does not require any carpentry skills, and that is relief to many of us.

In terms of cost, metal sheds will usually come in at about half the price of comparable wooden sheds. So if you are on a tight budget, this will be a big factor in your decision making.

Compared to wooden storage sheds, metal sheds do not rot, neither do they split nor warp. They don’t suffer from damp either. So in terms of maintenance and longevity, metal sheds are not exactly lacking.

That is not to say that metal sheds don’t have problems of their own. Steel sheds suffer from rust. This is a serious problem, but one that can be overcome by using aluminum instead of steel. Aluminum costs a lot more, but in the long run it works out cheaper.

Metal sheds are not the best looking sheds out there, I admit. So if appearance is important to you, then you will obviously have to opt for a different material.

There are lots of different metal sheds on the market, that sometimes the number of choices can be somewhat overwhelming. I can’t really help you in making a choice, I’m afraid, but what I can do is show you two models that appeal to me.

The first one is the Arrow Allington. This is an attractive shed that has floor dimensions of 10 X 12, with a wall height of 62 inches. It is easy to assemble and has a durable enamel finish.

The Arrow Estator is from the same manufacturer. It has floor dimensions of 10 X 14 with lots of floor room. It offers loads more storage space than you would expect from its dimensions.

Why not check these two models out and see if they suit you? If they don’t, there are still many more that you can choose from.

I don’t think the idea of plastic storage sheds had even been conceived when I was growing up. In those good old days when you thought of garden sheds, you would inevitably think of wooden sheds or metal storage sheds. How time have changed…

Even though I am reluctant to admit it, plastic storage sheds are a very good option to consider. There are many qualities, which make this the case, and we’ll be exploring a few them in this article.

I am always cost conscious, and the first thing I like about the plastic variety of storage sheds is that they are inexpensive. Plastic is generally a much cheaper material to produce than metal, and it is not a perishable resource like wood. This means that plastic sheds will give you a much better run for your money.

We all know that plastic is light… much lighter than either metal or wood. The benefit of this is that plastic is the ideal material for garden shed kits and for portable sheds. This also makes them easy to assemble, and if you decide to build your own shed, a plastic shed offers the easiest option. Traditional sheds can take a whole weekend to assemble, but with plastic the job can be finished in less than four hours.

In terms of maintenance, plastic storage sheds are second to none. Unlike metal sheds they don’t rust. Neither do they rot or split like wooden storage sheds. They are 100% waterproof and do not need repainting.
Basically, when you get plastic shed, you’ve got yourself a shed for life.

The one drawback I can think of is the fact that plastic sheds are easier to be blown over by gales and strong winds. It is important to bear this in mind, especially if you live in an area where strong winds are common place.

Weighing up all these factors, I have to admit that plastic sheds are indeed worth buying.

I usually try to be impartial in my product review but when it comes to vinyl storage sheds I just can’t. There is just something about them that makes me go overboard. So please do bear with me if you find this article… erm a bit boisterous.

Let me start by stating that whoever said vinyl sheds are storage sheds really needs to get their heads examined as soon as possible. Vinyl sheds are so much more than storage sheds, and that is why I think the term ‘vinyl storage sheds’ is completely misleading.

I used to think that real men did not use storage shed kits. You see I am from the old school, and I firmly believed that things had to be done the hard way, or not all. Why use a kit when I could use a saw? I wouldn’t want to be found dead with any of those fancy garden shed kits.

Ok… I will reluctantly admit that a few real men (like me) do use kits.

With kits, like the ones listed above, all the parts are already made, sized and treated. You don’t have to do anything, other than assemble them. The days of losing my fingers to my wily old saw are well and truly in the past. A shed that would take me a whole weekend to put up, can now be done on a Saturday morning. Hey, I am not complaining, at all.

Many of the kits also come with a choice of garden shed designs that you can use. This means that you are not limited to just one design. I think that is a great feature, because at the end of the day, variety is the spice of life.

In addition to the designs, they also come with instructions for assembling the parts. That means that even a twelve year old with half a brain can use one of these storage shed kits and set up a storage shed with very little outside help. Personally, I think that is great. Don’t you?

I used to think that these garden shed kits were only useful for plastic and portable sheds. I couldn’t have been further from the truth. Whatever type of shed you want, you will find a kit for it. You might also consider second hand sheds. If you go to a website like CraigsList you are likely to find people who have put up their portable sheds for sale. If they are in good condition then you can end up paying a mere fraction of the price of a brand new storage shed.
