So you want to take on the challenging task of building a shed door?  I admire your determination, because most people I know would rather get their tooth pulled out than build a shed door themselves.

However, when you consider that a new door from a DIY retailer could cost in excess of $200, suddenly the option of building your own doesn’t seem so bad after all.  Some of us don’t have a lot of money to throw around, so anything we can do to save even a few pennies is very useful.

Let’s set about building a shed door in a manner that even a first timer will feel comfortable with.

  • You will need to determine the measurement of the door opening for the door you want to build.  Use a tape to measure the length and width of the opening.
  • Get a piece of plywood that is longer and wider than the opening you have just measured.  For a single door, you will need to cut off a piece that is equal in width and length to the opening.
  • The next step involves painting the plywood and leaving it to dry for an appropriate amount of time.
  • About a foot below shoulder height, fit in the doorknob so that it is about 4 inches from the edge of the long side of the plywood.
  • Screw in one hinge a foot below the top of the door frame, and the other hinge a foot above the bottom of the door frame.
  • Also drill holes for the hinge a foot below one of the short sides of the plywood, and the other hinge one foot above the other short side.
  • Proceed to attach the door to the loose ends of the two hinges.

That is about it.  You have not only succeeded in building a shed door, you have also fitted it to the shed.  It wasn’t that difficult was it? Congratulations for taking the steps to build your own shed door.

It is important to get your measurements right, otherwise you will end up with a door that is either too small for the opening, or one that is over-sized and does not fit into the opening.  Just one small mistake can prove to be very expensive, so it is in your interest to be very careful.
